Two dead in overnight Russian attack on infrastructure in Ukraine, officials say

LONDON – Russia attacked targets across Ukraine overnight with 241 drones and five missiles, striking energy infrastructure and killing two civilians, according to Ukraine’s air force and government officials.

About 175 drones and four missiles were shot down, jammed or otherwise destroyed, the air force said. Sixty-five drones hit targets at 14 locations, the air force said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the targets were “peaceful Ukrainian cities and communities.” Attacks of this type occur “almost every day and night,” he said.

“The main targets of these attacks are the infrastructures that maintain daily life,” Zelenskyy. saying on social media on Sunday.

At least two civilians, one in Donetsk and another in Novhorod-Siverskyi in the Chernihiv region, were killed in the Russian strikes, Ukrainian officials said. However, the main target of the attacks was the industrial city of Kremenchuk, where some energy infrastructures were attacked.

“Repair work began immediately after the attack and continues continuously,” Volodymyr Kohut, acting governor of the Poltava region, said in Ukrainian in a message posted on the Telegram messaging app.

Due to the attacks in the region, the power supply situation remains “complicated” and the stability of heat and water supply is affected, he said.

The city of Fastiv in the kyiv region was also attacked by drones for the second time in one day.

Zelenskyy said on social media on Sunday that this week alone, Russia launched more than 1,600 attack drones and around 1,200 guided aerial bombs, its main targets being infrastructure that keeps everyday life alive.

Zelenskyy also attempted to reiterate Ukraine’s need for more air and missile defense systems.

“The priority is clear: more air and missile defense systems, and more support for our defenders,” the president said. “Each agreement must be implemented more quickly. I thank everyone who works to support Ukraine.”
