The 27 -year -old man who allegedly shot and killed four people in a Midtown office building on Monday wore a note in his pocket claiming that he suffered from CTE and asking that his brain be studied, police sources told ABC News.
The note also made references to the police. The shooting took place on Monday in 345 Park Ave., which houses, among other companies, the NFL headquarters.
CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is a brain -related brain disease related in the head, often seen in veterans and military athletes, including soccer players, hockey players and boxers. CTE cannot be diagnosed in a living person with certainty, but doctors can suspect depending on the symptoms and history of trauma in the head.
The suspect, Shane Tamura, who the police said he has a documented mental health history, played high school football.

A police officer and a civilian were shot in the center of Manhattan on Monday by a suspect who fled to an offices building, police sources told ABC News.

It is alleged that Tamura shot and killed four people, including a police officer out of service that works in security in an office building in Centro de Manhattan, authorities said during a press conference on Monday night.
Police have not detailed a potential reason for murders.
The NFL commissioner Roger Goodell sent a message to the staff, saying that one of the league employees was also injured in the attack.
Sources of application of the law said that Tamura had two warehouses of mental health crisis in their background in Nevada, one in 2022 and the other in 2024. Those sustained generally allow a person to be arrested for up to 72 hours if they believe they are a danger to themselves or for others.
According to a source, when there is this type of retention in Nevada, officers have to transport the person to the hospital. Once that happens, the medical staff takes over and decides how long to retain the person.

New York Police officers and other police officers expect the ambulance transfer of the killed officer of the New York Diar Islam police, who was killed during a massive shooting in the center of Manhattan, at the New York Medical Center/Weill Cornell in New York City, USA, July 29, 2025.

A Las Vegas police source said Tamura also obtained its CCW, or Hidden Carry, in 2022 and also has a previous arrest due to the state.
The three -page note that was in Tamura was described on Tuesday by sources as divagants. It continued references to the NFL that the sources described as vague.
The only way to confirm CTE is through an autopsy of specialists looking for specific changes in the brain. Researchers analyze the post -mortem brain to look for changes in the Tau protein that define CTE.
The disease causes symptoms, which generally appear years after trauma in the head, including memory loss, humor changes, confusion and problems of thinking clearly.
